Abbreviations, measurements and conversions

Living and working in Australia, I have always used metric cup and spoon measures, although I do have a couple of my grandmother’s recipes that use imperial measurements.

If you are not familiar with the standard Australian metric measurements, this is a helpful guide to the abbreviations and measurements regularly used, as well as some useful conversions.

Abbreviations

  • tsp = teaspoon
  • tbsp = tablespoon
  • g = gram
  • kg = kilogram
  • ml = millilitre
  • L = litre
  • mm = millimetre
  • cm = centimetres
  • oC = degrees Celsius

Standard Australian metric measures

  • 1 teaspoon (tsp) contains 5ml
  • 1 tablespoon (tbsp) contains 20 ml
  • 1 cup contains 250 ml

Dry weight metric conversions to ounces

  • 15 g = ½ ounce
  • 30 g = 1 ounce
  • 60 g = 2 ounces
  • 125 g = 4 ounces
  • 185 g = 6 ounces
  • 250 g = 8 ounces = ½ pound
  • 375 g = 12 ounces
  • 500 g = 16 ounces = 1 pound
  • 750 g = 24 ounces
  • 1 kg = 32 ounces = 2 pounds

Liquid measure metric conversions to fluid ounces

  • 30 ml = 1 fluid ounce
  • 60 ml = 3 tbsp = ¼ cup = 2 fluid ounces
  • 125 ml = ½ cup = 4 fluid ounces
  • 185 ml = ¾ cup = 6 fluid ounces
  • 250 ml = 1 cup = 8 ½ fluid ounces = ½ pint
  • 500 ml = 2 cups = 17 fluid ounces = 1 pint
  • 750 ml = 3 cups = 26 fluid ounces
  • 1 litre = 35 fluid ounces = 2 pints

Metric length measure conversions to inches

  • 1 cm = ½ inch
  • 2 cm = ¾ inch
  • 2.5 cm = 1 inch
  • 5 cm = 2 inches

Oven temperature conversions from degrees Celsius to Farenheit

  • 120 oC = 250oF
  • 150 oC = 300oF
  • 180 oC = 350 oF
  • 200 oC = 400 oF
